In the 9th century a pagan Duke Pribina had built the first recorded church in this area. The church was dedicated to his wife and was consecrated in the year 829. Besides Pribina, the town is famous for its connection to other historical figures such as Duke Svätopluk, Constantinus and Methodius the apostles of Christian Church. In 1248 Nitra gained the privileges of an independent king’s town thanks to the decree issued by the king Bella IV.
